INNER CITY PRESSURE

2013

This project was originally titled ‘Travelogue’ where my brief was to create a short video representing a journey with a clear emphasis on the passage of time. So in response I made a music video, set to the comedic tones of The Flight of the Conchords, which depict the lyrics through time-lapse photography.

Now this may have been stretching the brief a little, okay a lot, but bear with me because my logic was thus; The Conchords’ song ‘Inner City Pressure’ told a story, a satirised tale of the day in day out struggle of an individual trying to make his way in the world. My aim was to represent the story as a journey, with a beginning and an end (kind of), and to construct a visual narrative around the lyrics.

The video was created by first storyboarding some visuals set to the music, and roughly blocking out the visual narrative that I wanted to use during each section of the song. This was done with crude drawings on post-it notes stuck to foam board, allowing different ideas to be explored and quickly adapted.

As the ideas started to become more solid I created an animatic sequence set to the music in-order to test the visual concepts (below). This consisted of drawn stills for the most part, and gave a good indication of the structure of the final video. From this I could work out scene lengths and timings for transitions. As I was planning to use time-lapse photography, knowing the length of each scene was essential to know how many photographs were required to cover each scene.

Another aspect of this project was planning the locations for shooting, which ranged from staged environments to shooting in Cardiff city, including sitting on top of a freezing carpark shooting hours of sunrise and sunset footage. The final piece was edited together in Adobe Premier Pro using over 5,000 photographs.
